Firsthand Fungus

File:Hericium abietis 109093.jpg, Wkimedia Commons
My tasty treat

Enjoyed a lunch of scrambled eggs and my first wild harvested mushrooms! Found these along a trail growing out of decaying Doug fir logs and a stump. It is called western coral hedgehog or bear’s head. It is the only toothed fungus of its genus found in the Western U.S. Its scientific name is Hiercium abietis. Abietis means “of fir.”

Oh, it was actually very good. Sauteed in butter for a few minutes on each side. This species was first described to science from a specimen found near Priest River, Idaho.
