How can you give your child a more interactive science education? Do you feel that your knowledge in physics, biology, and chemistry is inadequate to tutor your child in the sciences? Have you forgotten most of what you’ve learned in school? You’ve probably grown up with boring science textbooks that were taught by boring instructors. Don’t pass that on to your children. You don’t have to be an expert. You don’t need fancy science kits. Everything you need is lying around in your home. Just jump right in and have fun! We’ll show you how.
DISCOVER THE SCIENCE PROJECT OPPORTUNITIES THAT LIE HIDDEN IN YOUR HOME
Our Science Project Video Library shows you how to use common household items to make your child’s science education come to life. Each week we organize a new set of science project videos for you and your kids–along with relevant conceptual lessons, inspirational videos, interviews with professionals, and discussions of how the projects reveal the glory of the Creator. A link to a new 60-90 minute “course” is delivered each week to your email inbox. Older courses are archived on our website for easy browsing. How you use the courses is up to you! Use them to supplement your existing curriculum. Use them as a systematic curriculum on their own. Or just pick and choose whatever looks fun.
Our basic approach is simple: start with the projects, then, link the conceptual lessons to the projects. Your child will appreciate the abstract science much more readily if it is closely connected with a series of hands-on projects.
We have three different levels of projects: beginner (ages 4+), intermediate (ages 9+), and advanced (ages 13+). You can use these projects as a fun school day activity or make it a weekend activity–whichever suits your schedule. Your children can learn at own pace.
WHAT’S INSIDE?
This is how it works. Each week we pick a theme to guide course content. We scan the web to find the highest quality science project/education videos available. By “highest quality” we mean four things: clear instruction, reasonable technical quality, entertaining, and compatible with the Christian worldview. We then organize the open-source content we find into an outline that reinforces a conceptual theme. We fill in the gaps with our own original video content. Each project shown is supplemented with a quality conceptual lesson that explains the “why?” behind what was done in the project.
In addition to the projects and conceptual lessons, we also include inspirational videos showing science concepts being applied in real-life. We often conduct interviews, both with our founder, Will Boyd, and with other every-day people talking about the work they are passionate about. Your child just might discover his lifelong passion or hobby while watching our videos!
Most importantly, we wrap up each week by relating everything back to God’s glory.
Here are some of the many fun lessons your child will learn by using our library:
- Make a working compact speaker out of a Styrofoam bowl (“Build Your Own Sound Amplifiers” course)
- Learn why the triangle is one of the most complicated instruments in the orchestra (“Make Your Own Instrument” course)
- See an entire orchestra consisting of instruments made out of trash (“Make Your Own Instrument”)
- See a boy who was able to hear for the first time by receiving an auditory brain stem implant (“Hearing and the Ear”)
- Make a turkey call out of a regular straw (“Animal Sounds”)
- See an awe-inspiring 3D animation tour of the inner ear (“Hearing and the Ear”)
- See our founder, Mr. Boyd, hoot like an owl (“Animal Sounds”)
We deliver a new course every week. Your child will have plenty to do.
WE’RE TRYING SOMETHING NEW…
We admit, we’re new. We’re bootstrappers. We cannot boast a large library yet (though it is growing quickly). Yet we think we might be onto something here. If you think we may be onto something too, do us a favor–give us a 7-day trial. See if your kids like it. Let us know what you think.
For those of you who are the innovative type, we have a special request for you. Give our service a try and make a radical shift in the way you teach your child science: start with the projects, then teach the concepts. This simple flip might revolutionize your child’s whole experience of science education. Our weekly-themed courses are well-suited for such an approach.
ELIMINATE YOUR FEELINGS OF ILLITERACY IN THE SCIENCES
Will Boyd, the founder of the Homeschool Institute of Science, has over 15 years of experience as a science educator. He spent several years organizing science field trips and hands-on learning opportunities for local homeschoolers before launching this new online curriculum. He spent several years surveying homeschool parents about what issues they were having with science education. One of the most frequently cited frustrations from parents was, “How do I teach science to my children when I feel illiterate in the sciences?” This is an understandable concern. Science is a challenging subject for many parents. Yet, undoubtedly, it is a subject that nearly every child has an insatiable appetite to learn more about.
With our Science Project Video Library, you can eliminate those feelings of inadequacy. Our projects allow you to focus on being creative and building things. Enjoy the pride of accomplishment as you transform ordinary household items into your own science models. Along the way, you and your child will hardly notice that you are learning complex theories in the process.
SPEND MORE TIME WITH YOUR KIDS
Another common concern homeschool families often have about “science enrichment programs” is the potential for parental exclusion. Many programs require that children get dropped off at the lab and the “experts” will handle the rest.
Our goal at HIS Inc is not to take your kids away from you. Rather, our goal is to put organized instructional resources at your fingertips so that you can have interactive experiences with your child at home. Your child will have many questions as he/she works through the projects. Your child will get ideas of what he wants to be when he grows up. There will be opportunities for discussion as we relate the projects and science concepts to God’s glory.
If you’re child asks too many difficult questions (as they are prone to do), you can take advantage of our “Ask Mr. Boyd” feature on our website. Mr. Boyd, in addition to being an experienced science educator, has five rambunctious little boys. He is well prepared to handle whatever your child can throw at him–at least as well-prepared as any man can reasonably be.
This video library is not only for your kids—it’s also for you. Many of the projects require “adult supervision.” This code for “Grown-ups get to have fun too!”
YOUR CHILD’S WORLDVIEW IS SAFE
One big problem that Christian parents face when using science education resources is worldview. Tragically, most science education resources today have sworn a blind allegiance to Darwinism. Even in topics where such references would seem irrelevant, evolutionary theory is continually reinforced and natural phenomena linked to blind chance! It is naive to think that those statements won’t make an impression on a child who loves science. Your child is presented with a false dilemma: science or God. At HIS, Inc we seek to eliminate that dilemma.
It is unavoidable that your child will ask the question “why?” when going through the science experiments. We don’t shy away from those questions. Our primary service is to deliver fun and informative science projects, but we also integrate those experiences into the bigger picture of God’s glory. When was the last time you thought about how a tin coffee can full of dried beans reveals God’s glory?
HIS, Inc is led by an experienced board of directors including science educators, science professionals, and homeschooling fathers. Decades of wisdom, professional experience, and solid Christian perspective characterize this dedicated group of men.
By using our video library, you can rest easy knowing that your child will not be exposed to secular worldviews in the process of enjoying science. We do draw from many secular sources (in order to bring you the best content from around the web), but it is all brought together under the banner of Christ. Occasionally, in order to showcase an otherwise superb resource, we will use a video or refer to a website that a makes a passing reference to evolutionary theory. But we will always label it with a warning so you can be prepared to discuss the issue with your child. Other than that, all of our videos are fully compatible with the Christian worldview. You can set your kids “loose” in our Video Library and let them explore God’s amazing creation through our videos.
SAVE TIME. SAVE MONEY. SAVE HASSLE.
The Internet is full of great miscellaneous science projects and videos. Problem: most of these sites essentially function as a data dump for large collections of reference and instructional materials. These are useful in their own way, but in practice data dumps are kind of like sending your child to the basement of a library and telling him that everything he needs to know about the U.S. Government is contained in those boxes stacked from floor to ceiling.
If you’ve ever tried to use free online material, you are likely familiar with some of the common problems that come with “free” information. There is no one you can contact for help. There is no feedback from a living person. There is no tutorial aspect. There is no systematic approach to the projects. It would take at least several hours a week just to find the right projects to sync with your lessons. That’s time that you don’t have.
When it’s free you get what you pay for—no service.
We thought we could solve that problem. We offer our service at $10/month—for the entire family. That’s it. That’s about 33 cents a day. It’s a simple service for a simple price. If you’re the thrifty budgeting type, you can even save yourself $20 by getting our annual subscription at $100/year.
Most of the projects in our library can be done with materials that you have lying around the house. Some of the more advanced projects will require you to make a trip to your local hardware store and make an investment of 20 or 30 bucks or so. Either way, the quality time you will get to spend with your child throughout the process will be well worth the investment.
If you’re still not sure, each subscription starts with a free 7-day trial. You can cancel at any time. We won’t harass you. You won’t hurt our feelings (well, at least not too badly. We’ll get over it). Just give it a try and see if it’s a good fit for your child.
TAKE BACK CONTROL
Don’t let the textbooks dominate you and your child’s experience with science education. Satisfy your curiosity. Science is the study of God’s creation. You have to get your nose out of the books and get your hands in the dirt.
The Bible teaches us that the creation reveals the glory of God. How do you expect your child to see the glory of God if he spends all his time staring at books? Nothing against books. They teach us important things, but the best way to see and understand God’s glory is by observing and experimenting with the created world that is all around us. Only then, will the abstract theories make sense to us and help us appreciate the complex mind of the creator.
By using our service, your child will have a new set of projects to look forward to every week. He will learn the mechanics of flight by building his own flight machines, the anatomy of the ear by making a model eardrum, the physics of sound by making simple sound amplifiers, and much more. As a parent, you can rest easy knowing that the week’s science activities are already planned. Just select a course that lines up with your curriculum plans and then watch the video demonstrations. You’ll never run out of ideas.
