Science Knowledge and Know-How

Open for registration Summer 2013

A modular, project-based curriculum produced for the Homeschool Institute of Science and available for the 2013-2014 school-year (September 2013 – May 2014). This curriculum is web-delivered and designed to supplement text-based curriculum or as stand-alone for families that approach science in a more exploratory fashion. Science Knowledge and Know How is available via monthly subscription and includes the following:

  • An approach that combines real world expertise and application with important scientific concepts through the study of discrete topics (sound, light, etc.)

  • Each module gives: 1) explanation of key concepts; 2) examples of and opportunities for application of concepts; 3) math application; 4) engineering and technology connections

  • Each module includes 4 weekly lessons including: 1) a video clip; 2) an audio file (podcast); 3) several printable documents

  • Several hands-on projects will be incorporated into the lessons to be done at home.These include: 1) project description & directions; 2) material list; 3) graphical explanation of project and/or how-to links

  • Place-based outside connections: projects and activities that will connect the concepts with the family’s own backyard or nearby natural area

  • A summary of other ways to dig deeper into the material including more DIY projects, links for more learning opportunities, and links for downloadable exercises that increase retention of new knowledge

For local families, monthly events will dovetail with the curriculum modules in content. Curriculum subscriptions are $17/month. That’s only $153 a year for all of your science needs for all of your children!
