Vitus Bering

Today in Science History

Danish Explorer for Russia and Peter the Great; born this day, August 5, in 1681. Died December 19, 1741.

The Bering Sea. The Bering Straight. The Bering land bridge. Who was this legendary sea captain? What were the fates of the the twin ships, the St. Peter and the St. Paul, for which the Pribilof Islands were eventually named? What about Georg Steller? Alexei Chirikov? What of the Aleut people and the fur-bearing creatures that fueled this economy and this expedition?

A tale of adventure in print or in film is an engaging way to integrate your homeschool science with literature, drama, and history!
